back ache

back ache

my dad underwent his cardiac bypass 3.5 years ago.He was absolutely normal after the operation. But he is addicted to alcohol. He continued his alcohol intake even after the surgery. Many advised him,had counsellings, but he could'nt stop drinking..A week ago he met with a small accident. He was admitted in the hospital, had his treatment ..now he is back to normal, even then he is still in hospital for complete recovery. He is telling that he is having severe backpain,he could'nt laydown or sit for a 5 minutes in the bed.(severe pain). The doctors tell us that he has some injuries in the backbones.(had his whole body scan,x-ray).I have a question that is this pain clearly related to the backbones or is it related to the cardiac surgery..now he is under the supervision of neuro specialist.
All his heart rate, pumping rate is normal now.(but when he was in ICU his pumping rate was bit reduced)
please help..

It is very unlikely your father has a back problem due to open heart surgery especially when the doctor states the problem is related backbones.  It seems the doctors are basing there opinion on X-rays.  The pain is may likely due to spinal degeneration such as osteoarthritis effecting the cartilage and bone tissue of the joint parts, and this kind of deterioration of the backbone may generate neurological pain since the nerves of the joint parts are compressed.

Hope this gives another perspective, and thank you for the question.  Take care,

Ken

I recently wrenched my back and the pain is so bad that I have to roll out of bed.  My research on the issue and talks with other people that has had a back pain problem indicates it takes about 4 weeks....I don't know the specifics of an individual's back problem, but I can state it is very painful.  Your father's doctor's comment that it will take a few weeks is encouraging and indicates the back problem has some ability to heal.

Thanks for your reply, and I wish your father well going forward.
