I think what Silverwhite was asking is,which beta blocker or blockers have the least impact on thyroid function? That would be my question as well.(keeping in mind there is more than one class of blockers, such as inderal being different from toprol..which is a more specific beta blocker).thx.

Hi, I must have missed the opening thread, but I don't think I can answer this question, but I can give my own experience. I myself have been hypothyroid, Hashimotos since 2000, and suffered symptoms at least one year before being diagnosed.

I also have hypertension and have been on Atentonol for about 5 years. My thyroid levels have been constantly changing and my dose keeps changing every six months if not more often. I thought I was steady at 125 mcg of Synthroid, but after a hysterectomy, my thryoid went crazy again, and my thyroid increased to 150, then 175 AND NOW 224 MCG DAY.
Meanwhile my heart began playing games with me and I had symptoms of a heart attack and after lots of testing, it was concluded that I suffer from Variant Angina, or Pretzmetals Angina or what is called Coronary Spasms , the heart doesn't actually have blocked arteries, but goes into spasms and because of reduced blood flow, it feels as if it is a blocked artery, and is quite painful, can actually have a MI or sudden death.

Last week my dr. took me off of Atentonol and put me on a calcium channel blocker, DILTIAZEM CD HCL CAP SR 180. The reasoning my cardiologist gave me for changing meds was that the Atentonol was worse for my Migraines and Raynaulds Disease and the calcium Channel blocker would be more gentle for my heart, keeping it from going into spasms. As far as the Thyroid goes, I am not a dr. and this med is still too new for me to be able to report what side effects there may or may not be and how this may affect my thryoid. I would love to hear what others say though, as my thyroid seems to be getting worse and worse since my hysterctomy and I would like my thyroid to be stable for once and find a med that actaully works.

'By the way, a while back, last month I believe there was a thread I started asking what the connection if any between thyroid and heart disease. Looking forward to others feedback.                        Fluffypurrcat
