beta-blockers and pregnancy

by Cathy12, May 29, 2003 12:00AM
Dear doctor,
my daughter is taking atenolol for frequent symptomatic PVCs, she has mild MR but no MVP. She is considering getting pregnant, is it safe to be taking atenolol during pregnancy or she should discontinue it before she gets pregnant.
thank you for your answer.

Cathy,

Beta-blockers are not recommended for pregnant mothers except when clearly indicated for certain specific conditions.  Atenolol has been associated with low-weight babies and has been shown to cross the blood-placenta barrier and distribute within the fetus in the second trimester.  Have your daughter consult with her obstetrician for alternatives.

Good luck.
