Hi there was wondering if you could give me some advice as i am not due to see heart specialist for few weeks.Back in February i was give a nitrate spray and 25mg
atenololAtenolol
Atenolol-chlorthalidone to take as i was diagnosed with possible
unstableUnstable angina angina and stress test was scheduled for fortnight later.I had stress test which was reported as negative for signs of
ischemicHepatic ischemia
Ischemic colitis
Stroke
Transient ischemic attack
Transient ischemic attack (tia) change and i was on for about 10mins so told angina unlikely but told i could keep on 25mg
atenololAtenolol
Atenolol-chlorthalidone as it probably would not do me any harm and seemed to be reducing palpiations. My chest pain has continued but g.p thinks it is combination of anxiety and
costochondritisCostochondritis. In last few weeks i have had mild oedema of both legs and am feeling bit tired my g.p has listened to heart, taken few blood tests such as blood count and electrolytes both
normalNormal saline flush had 2 ecg's reported as normal and she said my heart and chest sound clear on stethoscope.is it possible the atenolol can have triggered off heart failure as i did have an asd which was repaired 3 years ago,dvt ruled out as well by g.p.,is it possible that the atenolol is causing mild fluid retention without it being too serious or being related to cardiac failure (is oedema a possible side effect i am only on 15mg now as i have cut down slightly)do not want to stop them completely until i see cardiologist or is that wrong and should i stop immediately, any help much appreciated.
From what I have read...calciumm blockers have less side effects, but beta blockers are used more ofter. Cardio says I am on a low dose and shouldnt feel much side effects except dizzy the first few days. I am very confused what to do. Whether to listen to the cardio or the elelectrophysiologist.
Right now the only thing I am on is Klonopin (for involuntary jerks at night) but was told to take it during the day for the other symptoms by my GP. Both the cardio and electro doc agreed I could take the Klonopin at night still but stop it during the day and take what they gave instead. But again...which is the right one???? Does anyone have any opinion, experience on beta vs calcium blockers?
Does anyone have any ideas
Everyday I took the Toprol, it made me sick, flutter heartbeat, double beats, pounding heart, etc. My hands and feet stayed cold and I started to experience memory loss and tightness in my head. It was to the point with taking the XL, I knew when it was being disbursed into my system, palpitations, coldness and no energy.... just total dread
I told my doctor that I had to get off of them, so I began reducing my dosage in half. The pill are scored and I broke it in half, I took .25 for 10 days and then got a prescription for
.25XL and starting breaking those in half. I took the .12.5mg for 10 days and then I stopped. Had a few uncomfortable moments but I was fine and now, I have a palpitation every now and then, but I'm much better off of them. They are a very serious drug and unless you clearly have a heart problem, I would not take them.
My problem is SVt that happened only one time in my 50 years of life and my doctor put me on them too soon. Every EKG, Stress test, Echo was negative and my blood pressure has always been 100/70.
Good Luck to all!
Today, I can hardly tell I am taking them. My performance on the bike slowly improved to a very strong level, I no longer have problems with dreams, cold feet and hands. I do feel more sleepy and tired but fight it by being aware of it and using my will power. My BP is very well controlled and PVC's are gone.
For people with aortic disease like me, they're a lifesaver. Try to stick with them, or try swtiching to a different BB.
I am a 46 year Native American male. I have been on beta blockers for high blood pressure for 26 years. At various times, i have also been on cal. channel blockers. In August of 1986, I had a card. event that damaged the bottom back side of hear based upon a nuclear stress test at that time. In about 1994 it was discovered that I had a benign tumor between the upper and middle portions of my left adrenal gland. Consistently treated by blood pressure meds. (Atacand and Atacand). I have mild chest discomfort for a few seconds at a time off and on for intervening years. Dr. always said it was stress. Two weeks ago had chest discomfort and nearly passed out. Had a EKG. It showed a 'glitch'. Had a nuclear stress test. Showed damage to bottom backside of heart. Dr. said it was: A. blockage B. artifact C. Scar Tissue. Over the years I have had mild problems with fluid retention. EF of 62. Chol is about 145. BP with meds at about 120/80. Sugar with meds at 99 to 117 fasting. Is beta blockers part of the problem or part of the solution?
I cant say if Atenolol is part of the problem or solution, since I am not a doctor. But, as a heart patient who is familiar with many heart meds, I must say that I have had good luck with Atenolol 50mg.(to slow heart rate) and Lisinopril 10mg.(to lower BP.) Also, I have good luck managing PVCs with Alprazolam, but the side effects are murder.
I have typically retained some water from time to time and always show progress of eliminating the problem as long as I stay away from diet soda, processed foods and fast-foods (which ALWAYS have tons of sodium and MSG) and more than one beer per day.
Sometimes chest pain is explained away as stress. However, since you have a cardiac history, stay in contact with a good cardiologist to keep an eye on your heart. One other thing... have you ever taken an asprin per day to thin your blood? You might want to talk to your cardio. about that, too..

The chest discomfort is still present almost every day. The Family Dr. and the Cardiologist have left me on all my meds with walking an hour per day in 30 minute segments and lose 20 pounds in the next 90 days. Then a follow up with cardio. The cardio described it as unstable angina since the discomfort comes and goes regardless of rest, exercise, or stress. I defenitely know that certain types of stress triggers it.
Due to a recent hospital stay in Europe a few months ago
I was given a prescription for Metoprolol and I think these
puppies narrowed my upperor lung airways permanently. I can breathe but it feels like I am sucking air through a straw. I wish to know is this is permanent or will the airways open up again with time? Liek most of you who suffered side effects with this drug, I have suffered the same effects also. Also I would like to mention
that I am still alive I used to weigh in at 349LBS at 5'7" that
was not good and I have a tracheotomy due to severe oxygen
desaturation problems. IS this time for lights out ? Or are their
any drugs that will open the airways. It could also be that
the lung airways have been narrowed from what my INternist told me.
I am seeing him again at the end of the month. Even though I
am no physician am I on the right track for possible outcome
of my problems?

I had the same feeling with Toprol...I had a feeling of having palpitations when I took Toprol and it felt horrible. In addition, I started to stutter, lose my train of thought and struggle finding words when I'd hold a conversation. Now that I'm off of Toprol, all is coming back fine.
I was put on Toprol for palpitations...no high blood pressure, no heart problem...all test came back normal. The toprol just wasn't working for me and I'm happy to be off of them.
Feeling so much better. It was scary getting off of them, back pain, chest discomfort...I never ever had that before. I did gradually reduce the Toprol, but you can't avoid the discomfort when getting off of them.
Unless I develop a serious heart issue, I will live with the occasional palp...it is okay
The metoprolol will not lower your BP as much as you think it will. I was at 100/60, and my doc still gave me 25mg. After taking the Toprol, I'm still at about 100/60 on most days. If I'm feeling especially anxious, it might go up a bit, but usually, it hovers right around there. I wouldn't be nervous about taking it. It really does reduce the sensations of the PVCs.

Just wanted to say please dont be afraid to take toprol XL everyone is different. For me it was a life saver I was petrified to take it at first beacuse i was afraid it would slow my heart down too much. My tachs and tias stopped immediately after I began taking it and I have not had a symptom since (or side effect) its been almost three years now. I was so weak I thought the tias were going to kill me, for me anyway it was a miracle. Best to all.
