bicuspid aortic valve and aortic aneurysm

I am a very healthy 31 year old male.  I was wrestling and running 7 miles a couple times a week until recently.  I recently found out that I have a bicuspid aortic valve and a 4.5 cm ascending aortic aneurysm with mild to moderate leaking.  I had no symptoms, and only found this out by accident.  The cariologist said we should monitor it until it reaches 5 cm, but suggested I should quit being a police officer to avoid possible rupture due to job related incidents that could occur.  The Dr. said he wouldn't recommend going back to the job after surgery either.  This Dr. is a well respected Dr. out of Barnes-Jewish in St. Louis and specializes in this area.  I have 9 years as a police officer and love my career.  I have a retirement, which i am vested with now.  I also need my insurance so i can have my surgery done when the time is right.  Is the Dr. being too conservative or do I really need to look for a new job.  Man this thing is driving me crazy!!!

Not to scare you or anything, but I suggest, just to rule out other issues, to visit www.marfan.org and www.loeysdietz.org

Both of these are connective tissue disorders which also cause aorta enlargement.  Marfan Syndrome patients will sometimes wait until your aorta reaches 5 cm, although with Loeys Dietz Syndrome, you have to get the repair earlier since your connective tissues are so lax, you are more likely to suffer an aneurysm sooner.  When you have eithe of theses disorders, you have to limit contact sports or sudden impact to the chest.  I believe that is why the doctor maybe  suggesting for you to change jobs.

You can find the characteristics of each syndrome on those websites. I totally understand your nervousness.  I am 47 yrs old and since the age of 13 was diagnosed as Marfan Syndrome.  Then in 2006, after I had an aorta repair, the doctors did genetic testing and found out that it is actually Loeys Dietz.  I also have 2 children that have the same genetic disorder and have both had their aneurysm repaired recently.  If you want further information, I would be happy to chat with you further.  Hang in there.  Try to arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible and write down questions for the doctor so you don't forget.  Try to stay calm and remember I am here for you.  Thoughts and prayers are with you.  Take Care
