bigeminy pvc

by lilinoe, May 29, 2007 12:00AM
I just received radioactive iodine treatment to treat my hyperthyroidism.  I went to see my doctor 1 week later about a sinus infection and while listening to my heart she discovered an irregular heartbeat and a pulse rate of 40.This led to an EKG and a diagnosis of bigeminy pvcs.  I was told that this can be, although rarely is, brought on by the radioactive iodine treatment.  I am short of breath and become winded climbing the stairs just to go to my bedroom.  My situation is complicated because I am also often hypoglycimic and have fainting spells and also sometimes have a hard time thinking.  When I exercise I often vomit because it feels like too much for me.  Or sometimes after exercise I'm completely spent and have been known to sleep on the floor even before hitting the shower.  I've attributed this to the hypoglycemia but now I wonder if perhaps  I've had bigeminy pvcs before the radioactive iodine treatment.  Does this make any sense?  Also if this condition was brought on by the radioactive iodine treatment, will it be permantent?  I'm due back to see my doctor next week for another EKG but I am grateful for any early information.  Thank you so much.

Bigeminy isn't uncommon and PVCs surely are not.  I would assume that as the radioactive substance passes from your system, the bigeminy will ease.  You may have had them previously, but there's no 100% sure way of knowing.  Your symptoms could be related and I would absolutely check with a cardiologist.
