my son is 14 yrs old 5 foot 9 inches and weighs 133 lbs. he has biscupid aorta valve with root dilation. within 6 months his aorta measurements went from 3.4cm to 3.6cm. his doctor told him to stop all sports and weight lifting. To avoid contact to the chest they are concerned of his aorta bursting. He is upset with this and feels they tookeverything away fromhim.is this neccesary.

He has a choice, sports & weight lifting, or his life!  They are doing what is necessary to prevent the strain on his aorta which may cause it to burst.  I don't know what their plan of treatment is, but your son needs to realize the severity of his problem.

I totally agree with mammo..I know it is had as my son just turned 10 and was dx'ed with his aortic root anerysm in May after having a VSD repaired in 2006. And he at times feels it is unfair BUT he also understands if he doesn't control his B/P,salt intake and limit the physical things he might not see 11..Also if your son doesn't have one already I would invest in a MedicAlert bracelet/necklace for him as with anerysms there are no real symptoms that they are about to burst.Plus with a BAV too medical personal need to know these things if he is unable to tell them or you aint near.

My son is 14 yrs old and has bicuspid aortic valve with root dilation of 3.6. The dr. talk about surgery to replace the aorta. They say when it measures 5.0.But they are concerned with it bursting. Why wait for it to get bigger or wait for him to injury himself and it burst? Is this the best choice? What are the rates of it bursting before 5.0?  The dr.never used the word anerysm.. Is this what he would have?

Eric's Cardiologist told us that it is better to wait until the dilation/anuersysm is at the 5.0 measurement because the risks far outweigh the benefits of early intervention. That is why they at some point will be put on B/P meds to lower the B/P to slow down the progression as well as lowering the salt intake helps that out too.Now with that said,if the child had a connective tissue disorder they do like to do the repair earlier as they tend to tear or rupture earlier than 5.0..
I too when I heard he had this new condition was like "okay so when are we going to repair it"..Though the thought of Eric have another OHS scares the **** out of me.But I trust his cardio so when she says it is time I know she believes it is the best time for Eric.We see her again in Nov. for a follow-up echo and to see if it is B/P med time..
