blood clot

by merman, Dec 27, 2001 12:00AM
My husband blew his nose last night and his nose started bleeding for about 10 minutes.  After putting ice on his nose and holding his nose under the bridge he blew his nose again and a big blood clot came out of his nose.  Also, this morning a blood clot came out of his nose from blowing his nose.  Should he seek professional guidance about the blood clots?  We have known a few people die of blood clots in there brain.  Also, I might ad that he is 29, a little over weight and under a lot of stress at this time.

Dear merman,
The blood clots that one hears about causing damage are from the deep venous circulation.  They commonly form in the deep veins in the legs and sometimes inside the atrium of the heart if the person has atrial fibrillation.  Clotted blood from a nose bleed will not enter the circulation and cannot cause stroke or other damage.  If he is having continued nose bleeds he should seek the advise of an ENT doctor who may be able to decrease the frequency of the bleeds.

I have HOCM since 5 years. I have 27. 2 years ago, I had Afib. and I had cardioversion and OK. Last year I was pregnant and 4th month of my pregnancy, I had Afib again. I could't use antigoagulant medicine. In sep,2001 I have baby (7th month) In november 2001, I had stroke and left hepiplegie. The doctor said me that I have hypertroidi also.
Now I have Atrial Fibrilation, stroke, hypertroidi and trombus in my heart (left apendix)
I use coumadin, digioxin, propcyl, desal(lasix) daily.
I'm also being treated for my stroke(rehabilitation) and doing well. My major problem is my AF. I have still trombus in my heart according to TEE.
I have been using coumadin since 3 months. How long should I use coumadin for remove my trombus? Even if it's remove, does cardioversion works with 6 months AF?

I am not the expert on this but it is my understanding that Coumadin is used to prevent further clots and not disolving them. What is your current INR level? It should be between 2.5 and 3.0I can only express my heart felt sympathy for you I had a stroke at age 46 from atrial fib as well. Were you treated with TPA for the clot?I was ,and it has taken me two years to recover moderate use of my left side.Keep working at it.I would be willing to e-mail you back and forth and share with you my struggles and achievements in recovery from stroke and what I have learned about Afib if you want .

Thank you for interest to my problems. My INR level was 1.75 last week. I have been in trouble since 2 months. First week of stroke, I couldn't move even my head. but now, I can walk with someone's help. My mental and speak are OK. but I'm very breathless. I get tired very easy, and I afraid to have another stroke. If coumadin helps to me, my doctors think put to me on Cardioversion. But I live with AF since 5 months and I am not sure my heart to back sinus rithm.
Waiting your message, Thank you again.

I am glad to hear you are doing better. It is unfortunately a long and difficult road back to recovery.Don't give up.You will see improvements for up to one year .It took me two weeks after my stroke to be able to move my thumb on my affected side. Are you actively engaged in physical and occupational therapy to help restroe function?I went daily for three hours each day for speech, occupational and physical therapyfor a six month period. The therapy has to be intense .It sounds as if you are determined just like I was. That is good you have to muster all your energry to figt and return to your level of function.
The fatigue is a terrible issue.I slept for ten hour each night and would have to take a nap during the day.Two years later I still have fatigue and shortness of breath.I have what I call my short of breath days or my fatigue days.Your body has suffered and SURVIVED a massive trauma. It takes a long time.I still nap
Your INR is low it really should be up around 2.5 ,that is the recommended range for stroke prevention. Also the cardiac meds can make you fatigued. Are you near a large teaching ,research hospital for care?
