blood pressure meds

This is really confusing, perhaps someone has a reasonable explanation, because my cardiologist just shook her head today. I was on 2.5mg Ramipril for high BP. It was around 180/90.  My Doctor doubled this, 2.5mg morning and night. A week later BP was 185/102. Told to double it again, 5mg morning and night. A week later BP was 190/107. My Doctor always checks my BP using a stethascope. Last week I stopped my Ramipril and today my BP was 120/75. How can that be? Can ace inhibitors have a reverse desired effect? I feel so much better without this medication too, which is likely due to the lower blood pressure.
