I don't think magnesium does anything in particular in the blood apart from be transported around the body. The body uses magnesium mostly in teeth and bones, which hold about 70% of the magnesium in the body. There are a few different forms of magnesium in the body, some is used for helping signals along nerves, some help muscle movement. One of the best sources for magnesium is hard drinking water, but it's also available in green leafy vegetables.
There is a theory that a lack of magnesium could be involved with coronary artery disease, but I think a deficiency in magnesium leads to calcium deposits in the kidneys which we call stones.

It was suggested to me for help in control of my coronary artery spasms, but unfortunately, I didn't think to ask why.
