bypass arteries

Recently, my husband had mitral valve repair.  Prior to the surgery, he had a heart cath done and the two bypass arteries that were 10 years old showed perfectly  clear on the crth.  However, when the doc opened him up for the valve repair he determined that the exterior of the arteries was so bad they needed to be replaced.  Can you tell me what would cause this?

There are medications that can cause the arteries to get bad, medications such as blood thinners.  Also, meat has that effect on the arteries.  Does he eat a lot of meat?  If so, he may want to limit it in the future.
