cardiac cath affected by dobutamine?

by jwb34, Mar 03, 2009 09:57PM
My father has suffered from CHF for several years, & now his liver & Kidneys are failing.  He is in
the hospital and we want him sent home with a Dobutamine IV, as he always seems to improve while he is on this medication in the hospital.  His heart doctor did a cardiac cath while he was hospitalized and on Dobutamine (The IV was stopped only a few hours before the cath.).  Based on his cath results, the heart team said that he didn't need to be sent home with the Dobutamine IV.  My question is:  wouldn't the Dobutamine make his heart function seem better than it actually is, if he was given the cath immediately after being given the Dobutamine?
(as an aside, the cardiac cath was ordered after a kidney doctor questioned the very passive heart team as to what they are doing to improve the heart.  It should also be noted that the kidney function markedly improved once my father was on dobutamine & got worse after they took him off dobutamine just to "see how he did")
