cardiac versus cardiolite stress test

by Ron, Sep 02, 1999 12:00AM
51 yr old male who had angioplasty 5 yrs ago for 90% blockage in one artery. also taking 120 mg cardizem for blood pressure which runs 140/80 [ i drank beer but am cutting down]. have had no problem since then, no angina, no shortness of breath. the last month my heart skips a beat.  sometimes just once, other times 2-4 in arow.  these skips happen 1 to 4 times a day.  always when i am laying down or occassionally when driving and it will be one skip then.  i walk a brisk 2 miles a day and dont feel anything, starting to jog about 20% of that 2 miles at intervals, still feel nothing.  I had a cardiac stress test prior to angioplasty.  My family doctor said to have another test and mentioned both the cardiac and cardiolite tests.  He said the cardiolite will give more detail with scan and injection. he is leaving the decision up to me since i have no health insurance. the cardiac is $275 which is no problem but the cardiolite is $2000. My question is how much more detail will the cardiolite test give and which would you reccomend given my situation.

Dear Ron,

Are you getting this stress test for your skipped beats.  If so, then a stress test (treadmill) will help to characterize them or a holter monitor.

A cardiolite will determine areas of lack of blood flow to your heart typically done when someone like you ( after angioplaaasty ) has recurrent symptoms.

Please provide me with further details to assist you.
