cardiomegaly

by marcy's grandma, Jun 25, 2007 03:13PM
My grandma was recently diagnosed with Cardiomegaly.  I feel like we lack much information on this illness since we don't a specific treatment, if there's any, or length of illness, nor special diets.  Her doctor told us she won't recupareate fully and that she needed to follow a strict diet with no iron, sodium or fiber.  Combined with her diabetes, this excludes the vast majority of foods.  Is there a speacil diet?  Do you recomend her diet include more sugars, since she can control this with insulin and also since our most immediate concern is her heart problem.??

Cardiomegaly isn't a disease in itself, but the result of some other process.  Cardiomegaly means "large heart", so her heart is enlarged.  This could be from any number of causes, and I would want to know more about what those possible causes are.  She has every right to know this, and to ask questions about it.

As for the diet, I find it very confusing.  I can't  get my head around no iron and no fiber, and I'd be asking why and also for a second opinion - if only from a certified nutritionist.

The appropriate diet would depend solely on the cause of your grandmother's enlarged heart.
