carotid endarectomy, is it a solution?!
My father is 61 years old. 3 years ago he had a sudden loss in ability to control his left arm, and dropped his car keys, and that only lasted a few minutes. When he went for an MRI he was told that he has had 3 TIAs but there was no serious harm done. he was diagnosed with a 100% occluded left internal carotid artery, and a very mild blockage in the exterior one. Before this incident, he was perfectly healthy man; playing tennis 3 times a week, going for walks, not a smoker or a consumer of alcohol.

He was given medication which consists of:
1) Amlodipin 5mg once a day
2) Lisinopril 10mg twice a day
3) Atenolol 50mg once a day
4) Simvastatin 40mg once a day
5) Warfarin 6mg / 7mg alternatively once a day

2 days ago, he went for a doppler scan and was told that the external left carotid artery is now 50% blocked.

I am writting to you to ask for your advise on the matter and to question about the "solutions" such as carotid endarectomy on the 100% blocked artery, or any other options we have. I would also like to know if he is eligible to do the surgery, what is the success rate, risk factors, scarring and other alternatives for his case?
