child was diagnosed MVP w/regurgitation

by VJO__0__0, Jun 23, 1998 12:00AM

My daughter (20Yr now), was diagnosed with MVP w/ moderate regurgitation at the age of 8. She presented symptoms of rapid shallow breathing with significant pain, prpfuse sweating, and was pale. Diagnosis was made by a Pediatric Cardio; using a Holter monitor, EKG, and Sonagram. She was being monitored every 6 months for changes until the age of 10 when we moved out of area. Before moving, I asked about his recommendations for future. He said to only remember to pre-treat dental or any invasive procedure with antibiotics. That she would most likely not require anything more.
As a result, she has not been seen by any cardiologist since that time. She has given birth to a healthy daughter. At which time I and her OBGYN discovered her tolorence for pain is quite high. My Questions:
1- since her initial tests and diagnosis was more than 10 years ago, should she seek a re-evaluation?
2- I have recently learned that fatigue and depression are not unusual for patients with MVP. Since she has and still suffers from both, could those symptoms be treated to improve quality of Life?
3- She was born with a Patent Ductus that resolved with medication after a few days. In your opinion, do the two conditions relate in any way?
4- If MVP is typically discovered in the early 20's, is there any significant health concerns for her having been diagnosed at the age of 8? For instance- potential worsening of risks or developement of left ventricle?
Your help would be sincerely appreciated. I have been trying to find as much on this for her that I can.

Dear VJO,
There are many older questions about MVP that you can look through on this page.  I have answered your specific questions below.
1- since her initial tests and diagnosis was more than 10 years ago, should she seek a
re-evaluation?
A: It would probably be a good idea for her to have a repeat echocardiogram.  Her regular doctor can order this or she can see a cardiologist.
2- I have recently learned that fatigue and depression are not unusual for patients with MVP.
Since she has and still suffers from both, could those symptoms be treated to improve quality of
Life?
A:  It is not at all clear that fatigue and depression are caused by MVP although an association between the two has been noted.  It may be that these symptoms are due to something else.
3- She was born with a Patent Ductus that resolved with medication after a few days. In your
opinion, do the two conditions relate in any way? -
A:  No.
4- If MVP is typically discovered in the early 20's, is there any significant health concerns for
her having been diagnosed at the age of 8? For instance- potential worsening of risks or
developement of left ventricle?
A: No.
