: my son is 8 and has complained recently (2x) of a pain in the vicinity of his chest.  It didn't last long.  Once was during basketball and once was while doing nothing.  Could it be a cause for concern or is it just growing pains or gas?  He had a recent physical and was fine.   Thanks

Dear Jeanette,
Chest pain in children is most often due to muscle or joint aches, or associated with heavy breathing that accompanies physical exertion.  I think that a physical examination by a pediatrician or family practitioner is more than adequate to rule out any serious disorders of the heart or lungs.  Having done this, I believe that reassuring your child is all the treatment that is necessary.
