cholestrol levels

by sansem, Oct 05, 2009 03:52AM
Hi ,

I am a 36 year old male. I have been checkling my cholestrol levels at regular intervals. Sometime around 5 years back my LDL cholestrol level was in the range of 300.However post medication (fibator) and excercises it has come down to as low as 110. However HDL cholestrol has been consistenly around 24 . The intensity of excercise has also been increased and i have increased the intake of quality food. However the HDL levels have not improved.

Pls help me on this.

As with many people, taking medication to lower cholesterol seems to do them both, LDL and HDL. It isn't easy to get HDL raised and it has been reported that the following can help.
Exercise. but this must be aerobic gentle exercising, not exhausting marathons etc. It is important to note the length of exercise is more important than the intensity.
Certain foods, especially fibre helps many people. oats, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, at least 2 helpings a day. These are soluble fibres, the ones required for HDL production. Cranberry juice is also good.
Oily fish, such as mackeral, sardines, pilchards are high in omega oils, These oils tend to raise HDL ana are good for arteries.
Increase monounsaturated fats. Peanut butter and olive oil have been shown to increase HDL in some people without increasing total cholesterol.
Trans fatty acids (partially hydrogenated vegetable oils) increase LDL and reduce HDL.
Check food labels for these and cut down as much as possible.
Lastly, alcohol has been shown to increase HDL in many people although the AHA or BHF will never admit to this. One or two units a day is the maximum required. Maybe this is why the fat guzzling french seem to get away with heart disease, they consume gallons of wine with every meal.
I hope this is of some help, it's the limit of my knowledge I'm afraid.
