continous hiccups

Hi,

My husband has been getting continous hiccups for sometime. He has had this issue once before and the doctor prescribed an antipsychotic medicine. But recently the hiccups have started again, and they go on for a whole day or more. The only time there is some relief is when he sleeps.  Is there a medical reason for this ? I am worried whether it is an indication of some serious problem. Are there any tests that determine the cause?

Persistent or chronic hiccups are not as uncommon as you might think.  That doesn't mean they aren't a huge problem however.  The people I have known with this condition usually have the type of hiccup that is deep and painful.  Physical and mental health can take a dive as the ability to sleep, eat, speak, work, and/or relax is often severly impaired.

Thorazine or Depakote are sometimes ordered because they are drugs that help relax the diaphram.  It is possible that some neurologic problems or CHF (heart failure) can be a trigger for persistent hiccups.  Does you husband have a heart problem that you posted your question on this forum?

I have heard that stimulation of the vagus nerve (by implanting a device) may hold some promise to stop unstoppable hiccups.  I doubt this is used in any but the most extreme cases.

I hope your husband gets relief soon.  Does he still see the physican who had success in the past treating him for this problem?

I had the hiccups for a month straight several years ago. I went to the ER and the doctors laughed at me and basically told me to deal with it. It was annoying however they stopped after that four week period and I have not had any issues since.

I think there are several potential causes.  A physician would be the best judge of a cause after a thorough exam and history.  Sometimes treatment has to proceed without an answer to the 'why' question.  I guess I would be trying to pin down any common factors between the two times the hiccups have become a problem.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. My husband is only 28 years old and does not have a heart problem. At the time I posted this question I did not realize that this was a heart disease forum.
As of now he has not visited the physician a second time but he is planning to do so tomorrow, if the problem still persists. He also has severe cold, could that have anything to do with this?
