coronary vasospasms

by somers9, Jun 04, 2008 01:23PM
I am a 52 year old male, was a heavy smoker but quit January 07. For the past year have not felt right; chest pain, loss of breath, constant fatigue, burning in center of chest. Doctor sent me for stress test and blood work, was amazed at good results after so many years of smoking.Said he felt symptoms were related to stress. After a few months with same symptoms went back to doctor and I had another stress test this time nuclear.Same results everything fine. Was awaken one morning at 4am with sever chest pain went to ER.By the time I got to ER (15 min) I was fine. At ER, blood work, EKG etc, everything looked fine but they were admitting me to review blood work after 8-16 hours as results might change. While waiting in ER, I have another attack, they tell me I am having a massive heart attack and they are sending me to different hospital to Cath Lab. After 15min symptoms go away and all is normal  again. They now rush me to other hospital for cathaterization. During procedure doctors are saying all looks good no blockage, valves look good, all is well. seconds after wire removed, another attack acures so now they cut and go in the other side. Finally they can see the heart in a vasospasm.I am currently on 240 mg of Cartia XL twice a day, Lisinopril 20 mg once a day and 40 mg of simvastatin once a day. I was on another med but gave me severe headaches. Things were fine for 4 months but have now been having attacks weekly, doctors say take medication that is all they can do. I am looking for advice and a good doctor specializing in vasospasms in Connecticut. Thank-you

Hello:
Your situation sounds exactly like what I think I have, which is Prinzmetal's variant angina. Look up Jewish Hospital and Prinzmetals  - there is some good information about a current study they are doing, and treating the condition with an over the counter amino-acid - L-arginine. Good luck with your situation.
