If you haven't had follow-up for the open heart surgery that you had as a child, now is probably a good time to have at least an echocardiogram. It is difficult to know for sure if your symptoms are related to your heart from your description, especially not knowing what type of heart surgery you had as a child. But there are certain types of congenital heart defects and post-operative changes that could affect the way blood flows and how well blood is oxygenated that could cause shortness of breath or cough.
