depression and pacemakers

by Terri, Sep 10, 1999 12:00AM
My Dad had a pacamaker put in approx. 3 months ago.  He now appears to be depressed.  Any correlation between the depression and pacemaker?  I posted this question yesterday, but was unable to find the reply.  Thank you for your help.

No, the pacemaker should not cause depression. More likely, the depression is related to the underlying heart condition that led to the need for pacemaker implantation. The realization that he has a heart problem (and is not a young man anymore)may have also led to the depression. Also, it is possible that the depression has nothing to do with his heart. I would suggest calling his cardiologist who can make sure that he is adjusting to his pacemaker in a satisfactory manner. Furthermore, he can arrange a consultation with a psychiatrist if he deems that necessary.
