dull ache in heart region at night

by bootss, May 29, 2007 12:00AM
I am 59 yo male that is taking Zocor 10 mg and Procardia 10mg. once a day.I have been on these for 2 years.
I am and have been experiencing chest pain only at night after about 5 hours sleeping. I awaken 5-6 times a week with a dull pain on the lower left side of my heart. It does not appear to be gas or bladder related.I am suspecting unstable angina but would like any info or suggestions you may have. I have a heart specialist from Henry Ford hospital but we have not pinned down the cause.Any suggestions or test recomendations will be appreciated.

Hello,
A cardiac evaluation including a stress test is a good option to help pin point the cause.  It is possible that it is cardiac related but is not a perfect story for cardiac chest pain.  The fact that it only happens at night and not during exertion suggests another cause.  It is always worth working up and ruling out cardiac causes in situations like this.
I hope this helps,
Thanks for posting.

I am 42 years old and after many years of heading out to the hospital for heart issues was disgnosed with three mild traces or regurgitation.  I was recently hospitalized because my potassium level dropped so low that my heart rate escaled too high.  I have been taking toprol 25 and finds that it makes me more sleepy and really affected the quality of my lifestyle especially being a single mom.

I have incorporated more excercise in my daily lifestyle but it seems to make me feel those palpitations more, sometimes its so often I panic and end up in the emergency room again, they too are so overwhelming to me that I am afraid to go to sleep at nights.

My cardiologist told me today not to think about it and that I really didnt need the toprol, most of it is from stress and anxiety and based on all my nuclear stress and cardia cath that I am fine. I also have gallstones and he suggest that I getthem taken out because that could very well add to my anxiety.

It is hard sometimes to feel like I am fine when these flutters fell like they are coming out of my mouth and from time to time feel pinches in my heart. Am I crazy? is this all in my head?

Can someone offer me advise?

Not sure what the pain in the left side of heart could be.  I would definetely get a battery of tests and start ruling things out.  I have a friend who has constant pain in that area and she has had every test available.  They chalked it up to her being overweight -- she even had an angio done to make sure it wasnt her heart.

No you aren't crazy.  i'm 39 and have been living with this since I was a teenager.  The Dr's always say dont worry about it but it is very hard to do. I honestly dwell on it every single day of my life.  Its like you're just waiting for the skips to happen out of the blue and ruin your day -- and scare the heck out of you.  For me it has actually CAUSED panic attacks.  If I want to go to the grocery stoer I think "What if I get a bout of flutters while I'm there ... what if I die in the store ... what if I'm laying in the fruit section and everyone is freaking out and calling an ambulance ..."  It sounds ridiculous but I bet a lot of other people can apply that same problem to their lives if they have PVC"s and PAC's.  I wish I had something helpful to tell you.  I can just say you are not alone!

Thank you very much for replying, It feels good to know that I am not alone with this.  I have actually started focusing more on where I see myself health wise and literally speak it out of my mouth when I feel like I am about to panic with these flutters.
I was doing some research earlier and found out that apple cider vinegar and baking soda helps to diminish the flutters.  Alogn with extra supplement of magnesium chloride...do you know anything about those remedies?
