echogenic cardiac focus

My son was diagnosed through U/S w/  an echogenic cardiac focus. Although we were told it is rare and aside from a small correlation with Down's Syndrome, that we would "have nothing else to worry about, do not even report it to his pediatrician, and in most cases it is undetectable in a later U/S"...I saw on the news the other night that a teenage boy was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Cardiologists believe that this finding may be an explanation to sudden deaths in various teenagers during strenuous sports activities. Both of these medical problems are due to a thickening of the heart tissue. My questions are... has there ever been any research to a correlation? Should we be concerned for our son in the future? There is never a follow up U/S of the heart once no other markers for Down's are sited, but should there be? Thanks for your time...I do know if my curiosity may be far fetched but perhaps it will put my mind at ease. Plus, I'm a surgical nurse whose always thinking...

There is no correlation as far as I know.  Of course there really is no way to tell as our current knowledge of HCM is very limited.  If there is any family history of HCM, your son should be screened later in life, usually around the time of puberty.  This is when the heart grows the fastest, as does the rest of the body.
