ekg question

by kr5f, May 17, 2002 12:00AM
My wife just visited a pulmonary specialist who did an ekg. he was not happy with the results and forwarded them to our doctor.

Our doctor called today and said there are signs of "subdued waves" on the ekg results and wants her to come in for a stress test.

He said that there is probably nothing to worry about unless she starts having chest pains or shortness of breath.

What do the initial results mean and what would our doctors concerns be at this point and what will the stress test show?

Thanks for listening ...

Dear kr,
I'm not sure what he meant by "subdued waves".  Perhaps he was referring to ST-segment depression.  This is a marker of potential blockages in the coronary arteries.  It could also just be a normal variant.  I agree that a stress test will help to clarify the situation.  The stress test should be done in conjunction with an echocardiogram or nuclear scan to better image the heart.
