An enlargement of the left ventricle will effect the heart's ability to adequately pump enough blood into circulation to meet the system's demand for oxygenated blood. When serious there would be shortness of breath, chest pains, muscle fatigue, etc. or possibly no symptoms.

The consultant should be able to determine the underlying cause, and depending on the underlying cause will help determine the prognosis.  An enlarged heart for a young child can be related to a congenital anomaly, but should/can be effectively treated.

I wish your son well going forward, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.  Take care,

Ken
