enlarged pulmonary ring and pregnant

by aminata, Nov 22, 2001 12:00AM
Hi,
When I was 14, I was diagnosed with an enlarged pul. Artery ( pul ring=31mm). I had many repeated bronchitis’s when  and I went for  a chest Xray and my heart seemed enlarged. I did an echocardiogram right away and it showed a normal heart size ( it seems enlarged because of the dilatation of the pul. artery).Anyway, nothing wrong was detected. Everything seems normal ( no shunt, ejection/rejection normal/ no valvulopathia, no septal defect, systolic pulmonary flow was normal, mitral and aortic flows normal...). I had a second sono. 3 years later and the results were identical to the first echocard.
anyway am 25 today and 13 weeks preg. I was very active before my preg (jogged 30 min 6 times/week), never NEVER experienced shortness of breath or fatigue. I did not experience shortness of breath since the preg.
I had a EKG done yesterday and everything was normal. The cardiologist listened to my heart. He said that the examine sounded very normal ( I have a heart murmur and he said that it did not sound scary at all).
I am going for a sono. in one week to make sure that everything is normal.
My question is:
Can my abnormality cause me problems because of the increased blood flow during preg?
Can it affect the baby?
How common is this type of abnormality?
By the way, the doctors were never able to really determine the cause of this enlarged pul.atery. They assumed that I might be born with it.
Thank you for your insight

Dear aminata,
Pregnancy does increase the workload on the heart and in some conditions can cause problems.  However, these problems usually are associated with symptoms such as shortness of breath, extreme lower leg swelling and extreme fatigue.  An enlarged pulmonary artery does not usually cause problems.  Your baby should not be affected by this.  Enlarged pulmonary arteries are not that common and may be due to increased blood return to the heart. I would recommend following up with the echocardiogram of the heart and then go by how you are feeling.  If you notice an increase in shortness of breath or fatigue I would notify your doctor.  Have a happy pregnancy!
