extra heart beat

by Tod-Wiliams, Dec 10, 1998 12:00AM

I'm 33, had an asc. aorta aneurysm repair (valve sparing) on 9-9-98.  Recovery was excellent.  One week ago I noticed my heart seamed to through in an extra beat every so often, sometimes every other beat sometimes every tenth beat or so.  I had an EKG and it showed that I have "supraventricular extrasystoles".  My cardiologist said not to worry.  I'm reasonably sure this is a very recent phenomenon, because since my surgery my heart beat is very noticeable to me, expecially at night (due to my valve being suspended in a dacron tube).  Anyway I was wondering what can cause this to happen, might it go away, is there anything that I should do?  I'm taking troporol (50mg/day) to reduce the possibility of future aneurysms and about three days ago I came down with a cold.  Thanks for your help.

Dear Todd,
The extra beats you speak of occur naturally in all persons, and they are benign,
i.e. they have no consequences.  Things like alcohol, caffeine, chocolate and
stress seem to bring them on in people.  Exercise is good, as is a beta-blocker
(like the one you are on) to help minimize them.  It is very likely that the few you had in the past went unnoticed, however, now that you are more aware of your heart, you really notice them.  Keep in mind that they are benign, they will do no harm and that most times they will go away completely. Good Luck.
