faster heart rate

faster heart rate

I am a 50 yo woman and for the past 3  years I have had a heart rate that seems to be around 80-100 bpm.  I can hear it in my head beating.  I am not overweight, I eat good, I take no meds, I am moderaterly active, try to work out 2-3 times per week.  Even when I just walk up stairs or get up out of bed at night, I feel might heart working hard. when I sleep on my side I can feel my heart pounding in the bed.  I have heard that it may be perimenopause symptoms.  My thyroid is borderline under, my blood sugar is on the higher side but not out of range.  My intuition is telling me that my body is deficient in some nutrient and my heart is having to work to hard for some reason.  Does this sound familiar, what is your opinion, advise?
Thank you,
Sharon

It seems that you have something called tachypalpitations, or rapid and strong heart contractions.  It may be a normal variant, but some important things need to be rulled out.  Nutrient deficiency isn't the first thing that comes to mind, however.  You first need to have an EKG to try to establish your baseline rhythm.  The other thing that may be necessary is something called a Holter or an event monitor which you would wear for a few days in order to document how high your heart rate goes, when does it go up and for how long it stays up.  You should also have an echocardiogram done to look for any evidence of structural heart disease.  Checking the thyroid and making sure that you do not have anemia should also be done.  If all those are negative then we can start looking into the less common things such as nutritional deficiency, etc.

I find this forum quite interesting...  over the past week or so i have had three episodes of rapid heart rate at bedtime.  i would go to bed feeling fine, but while in bed i would not be able to sleep with so many things on my mind.  i would then notice that my heart rate is at about 150 bpm.  it would ruin my sleep for the whole night with me tossing and turning and waking up throughout the night, getting no more than a few hours of sleep, mostly in the morning, b/w 5 and 7 am.  i have a family history of heart disease, and my doctor recently told me my cholesterol levels (good and bad) are a little off (low and high respectively), and that he recommended me coming in for a prescription to control them due to my family history.  can these two things be related?  should i be concerned?  can it be an anxiety attack or stress related as i am also under quite a bit of stress lately?
