I am Dr. Arch S. Miler III. I am on the reconstructive Forum. I am quite interested in sternal problems. I do feel it would be worth while for your father to have a 3D CT scan to see if your father has sternal instability , infection or both. He probably needs to have his white count, sedimentation rate, and CrP drawn to evaluate for an infection also. If there is an infection or instability, then he will require surgery to remove the wires, clean out the infection, and then close the sternum again. Dr. Scott Levin of Duke, and I have developed a procedure using a device called a talon which is used to stabilize the sternum after this surgery. You can see this in an animation on rapidsternalclosure.com. If you have any questions you may go to the reconstructivesurgery forum, or contact myself or Dr. Levin. Respectfully
