floppy Mitral valve

by yoong, Oct 15, 2004 12:00AM
I am a 32 year old female with a floppy mitral valve and slight murmur. I would like to know the risks involved in this condition. I am also thallasemic and recently have been having some discomfort on my left side and finding it rather difficult to breathe therefore have to resort to deep breaths almost gasping for air. I would like to know if this is related to my anaemia from thallasemia or it is a sign that my heart valve is failing! Please help and thank you for your time.

yoong,

Unfortunately I cant really comment on the risk of your condition without knowing more.

What you are probably referring to is mitral valve prolapse.  This term is often used somewhat excessively.

Important data to know would be --

What do you mean by floppy valve?
Was this a finding found on echo or just heard by the physician?
If on echo was there any associated condition invovling the valve such as leaking (regurgitation)
What is the amount of 'floppiness'

Innocent murmmers are often founf in people with anemia and are just indicitive of the flow in the heart.  An echo could answer most of your questions.

good luck
