Actually in some individuals a small portion of plaque can be removed without surgery according to a few small studies.
This reversal will not take place in all individuals.

In two articles published in Lancet and in JAMA,  there was a small study in which reversals and reductions of from 1% to 3% to 7% occurred over a period of 1 to 5 years in those individuals in a very controlled diet that was closely followed.
There has been another study,  also of small size,  and published in a lesser known journal,  where in some reversal of plaque was also noted.
In that study, most of the participants were also on statins in addition to the very extreme diet.

Only a small portion of the general heart patient population seems willing or able to follow such a extreme diet for years and years.

BTW,  nothing in following such a diet and exercise practice suggests in any way that also taking a statin is not useful.   One can do both and see what the future outcome reveals.
If nothing else some individuals may be able to halt progression of their coronary artery plaque,  even if they can't actually reduce it.

Seems a reasonable course to follow if one's situation allows one to try the meds and diet instead of getting a stent.
For those with stable angina,  it is reported there is no clear advantage to using a stent compared to using  meds,  diet, and exercise.   In those cases,  the option should be and is more and more,  given to the patient.
Of course each case is different and should be discussed with the doctor.

There are a lot of theories with diet about removing calcium from arteries but believe me, nothing works. The UK spends an absolute fortune on statins making drug companies very rich. You often hear that this is deliberate, but not in the uk. We have a national health service in which the government is having to put billions more pounds into to keep it alive. If Statins were a waste of money, they wouldn't be in the national health service. You also hear how people have been cured by various Doctors using diet alone, but not one has been proved. There will always be weak individuals who fall the effects of placebo and fall for their tricks. In most individuals, the heart has its own system for dealing with the effects of plaque, but opening natural bypass vessels called collaterals.

Unfortunately, it can't be removed once there.
