I also get this strange fluttering feeling in my chest. It scares me to death that I could have a serious heart problem but the "hard" and "fluttering" beats come up so randomly that I'm afraid that if I go to the doctor and they put a heart monitor on me for a few days that they wont find anything even though I know it happens...

I am 35 and 5'4 165 lbs.  I was diagnosedw/underactive thyroid and Mitral valve prolapse in 1990 .  I went through heart monitors & ekg, and echos every year.  The tech told me my echos showed very minor prolapse.  Lately I have been getting them often, I'm noticing that I am very tired and They are brought on after I eat. I get bloated and have to belch alot .  It has been happening for 1 hr straight a day every 5 min.  I know what panic attacks are because I suffered them in early 90's.  They have been gone for years.  I am very melow and dont seem to be nervous.  I am concerned because my dad @ 50 had these flutters the week before he had his heart attack & stroke.  He also had an ekg, and thalume stress test and blood work.  His test showed normal  and days later this happened to him.  I also have a friend who is thin that had the same problem, these flutters were causing her to have mini strokes because when the blood flows  the opposit direction, it can clot.  I think doctors dont take this serious enough.  My friend actually didnt take the medication and instead became a runner, & hasnt suffered them.
Its a weird feeling like your heart is doing a flip flop.  But thank God w/no pain.

What you just described is what I have had now for years.
It started in my throat with a flutter or what seemed to be a hard heartbeat in my throat as if something had cut my air off for a second ,.,followed quickly by a feeling of panic.
I noticed this started when I was diagnoised with an enlarged thyroid gland with muli-nodules.
I have had blood work done to see if my thyroid levels are ok and my thryoid still functions normally...or at least it seems to.
Now I get ..out of nowhere..even when I am at rest a hard heart beat in my chest, several times throughout the day.
It's weird because my younger sister is now experiencing the same symptoms..only hers comes when she is stressed.
If you have any ideas on what this is from...please contact me at ***@****
I have an appointment with my doctor to get my bloodtested for my thyroid function again next week. I am scared that I am borderline but the tests are not showing it and may need to be on medication. This is causing me a lot of stress and I am a nervous person to begin with..

Hi I am a 26 year old woman who has beensuffering from heart flutters since I was 20 years. It also came with a feeling of panic. I went to the hospital 5 times for this disorder. From there they sent me to a cardioligist. I had to wear a halter moniter for 48 hours. They recorded my heart beating very irregular at times and it was beating so fast at one point when they were listening to the tape they had to call and ask me what kind of activity I was doing at that time. After all of that was said and done they performed an ECG  were they found a heart defect called trivial palmenary regergitation. I am not quite sure if that is how you spell it. This horrified me. My doctor reasured me that I was going to be ok and that this is a very common heart defect that most of the time goes unnoticed by the people who have it. I am now 26 and still suffer from palpations and flutters but I am learning to live with them now. It doesn't scare me as much anymore. It does take me by surprise when I am getting ready to fall asleep and get the sudden jump in my chest. I have also noticed that for some reason it happens most before my period. I havalso noticed that alot of the women in my family suffer from this condition. So maybe if you ask some of your family members it could be hereditary.

Dear Koolsue,

I am sorry to hear about your palpitations. I think you should be examined by a doctor. I am unable to tell you what is causing the symptoms you are experiencing without examining you. However, your doctor will likely want to obtain a holter monitor and/or an event monitor.  The holter monitor is worn for 24 to 48 hours and records the heart's electrical activity. The event recorder is a device which is kept on for up to 1 month and also records the heart's electrical activity. These tests will help distinguish whether or not a specific rhythm disturbance is causing your symptoms. You should also ask your doctor about the swelling you are experiencing in your left leg. Meanwhile, avoid caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and stimulants such as those found in decongestants. After having your leg examined you should consider starting an exercise regimen.

I would also recommend asking your doctor about the feelings of panic you are describing. This may also be contributing to your palpitations. Hope you feel better.

Thanks for your question,
