heart questions

by Billy5, May 21, 2007 12:00AM
There are several questions regardimg the heart test results. On  echo report is written "Overall left ventricular systolic function is normal.Left ventricular ejection fraction is estimated in the range of 55% to 65%", however on the same echo CD tape there are several (Teich) ejection fraction measurements ranging from 55% to 69%. 1. Is Teich the best and most accurate echo method and technique in measuring and estimating LV ejection fraction? If no what echo method/technique is the best (and thus can tell whether LV ejection fraction is closer to 55%,60%,65% or 70% if the range is between 55-70%)? 2. Is echo better than calcium screening heart scan (High-resolution,ECG synchronized Computed Tomography of the heart with attention to the major coronary arteries LM,LAD,LCX,RCA SOMATOM  Sensation 16 CT scanner) in detecting and measuring posterior mitral valve annular calcification in middle age male adults? If no or yes Why? 3. Is Left Atrium usually slightly increased (3.7-4.3cm)in long distance runners(50miles per week for years) and if it is does it ever decrease in size with cessation of activity and by how much?In other words is it as with good elastic(streches out but returns)or bad elastic(streches out but does not return)?Thank you.

Hello,

1. Is Teich the best and most accurate echo method and technique in measuring and estimating LV ejection fraction?

An ejection fraction of 55-69% are all normal.  I would not focus on slight variations in estimates.

2. Is echo better than calcium screening heart scan (High-resolution,ECG synchronized Computed Tomography of the heart with attention to the major coronary arteries LM,LAD,LCX,RCA SOMATOM Sensation 16 CT scanner) in detecting and measuring posterior mitral valve annular calcification in middle age male adults?

history, physical, and echo are the best current measures to determine how to manage mitral annular calcification.

3. Is Left Atrium usually slightly increased (3.7-4.3cm)in long distance runners(50miles per week for years) and if it is does it ever decrease in size with cessation of activity and by how much?

I don't know the answer to this one.  It is possible but I haven't seen that studied before.

Hope this helps.  Thanks for posting.
