heart rate after exercise

heart rate after exercise

My question is fairly simple.  I've recently been diagnosed with mitral
valve prolapse, and I have the perception that my heart takes a long time
to return to its resting rate after exercise.  I am wondering what is the
"normal" time frame required for one's heart to return to its resting rate
after 30 minutes or more of aerobic exercise.
  Thank you very much.

Dear Eric, thank you for your question.  Generally, your heart rate should return to its resting value within 10-15 minutes after exercise, unless you are deconditioned. This should not be related to mitral valve prolapse.  I suggest that you track your resting heart rate just before you begin to exercise, during exercise, and 10-15 minutes after exercise.  Most likely, you'll find that you everything's normal.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.  Good luck!
