hi cholesterol

91 yr old mother, cholesterol, 279, has hi potassium levels, diet controlled diabetes, reaction to Rx med as leg weakness and some atrohy, and pain.  What can she use to reduce cholesterol?  Also takes 2000mg omega3 daily.

I'd zero on that, what's the reason?

from a statin? some react more that way than others. What if she went on a fibrate instead?

besides diet? well, niacin might increase HDL, which is good

but I'd also look into what is doe for her age group, which might be very different from what is right for the general population. E,g. some predictors might not apply to 90-somethings

also, looking at total cholesterol is being seen as not that relevant. You'd want to look at LDL and HDL and triglycerides, in general. Plus inflammation. If that sound fuzzy, then that's mainly because a lot isn't known.
