high blood pressure and exercise

I am 42, bp between 125/92  to 145/99, pulse averages 85. I am walking and want to know what is the recommended pulse rate for bp such as mine? I have been in the 130's, is it safe to increase that?

My physician is reluctant to starting me on high blood pressure meds at this time. He feels that is not quite high enough. I am able to comfortably hold  a conversation while exercising.

Are you taking blood pressure medication for your high blood pressure?  If the blood pressure stays high for years, it can wear out the heart muscle.  The pulse is not as much as a concern as the pressure is.  If you have not already done so, you should ask your doctor about a stress test to find out how your heart is working while you exercise. When you cannot talk is when your heart is beating to fast.  If the blood pressure is high, this could be a symptom of heart problems.  If you have any blocked arteries, you do not want to push yourself while exercising.
