Atenolol levels do not remain at a constant level throughout the day.  The levels peak and then drop.  This may be why you are experiencing the heart racing symptoms.  Do you take 50mg at once or 25mg twice a day of the Atenolol?  Brand name Tenormin is best as the different generics of Atenolol vary somewhat.  My mom took Atenolol and then the pharmacy switched generics to the Atenolol brand.  This threw her into heart failure and into the hospital.  She had to take the brand name Tenormin and then she felt much better until her heart failure advanced.  Then, she took Toprol XL which is like Tenormin, but stays at a constant level throughout the day.  She felt tired and not so well when she was on the Toprol XL.  She was allergic to the ace inhibitor, which would have helped her heart failure a great deal.
