high systolic normal diastolic blood pressure?

by thiagu, Dec 25, 2002 12:00AM
i am 60 years old. i have been hypertensive for the last 5 years. taking medication. took ENACE 1 mg. bp was under control  but had side effects a year ago, itching all over body. changed to amlodac 5 mg. it worked for a few months. then bp was 155/100. was given amlodac5 and minipres xl 5mg. systolic around 150-155 and diastolic around 80-90. stress ecg positive. radial angiography showed no problem. should any other tests be done? medication to be changed? i am an asthmatic all my life and now on seroflo inhaler.

thiagu,

Thanks for the questions.

First, I have never heard of the medications "Enace" or "amlodac" -- I suspect that the amlodac is amlodipine (given that it comes in 5 mg pills), but I have no idea what the enace is...

From the information provided, it sounds as if you need better blood pressure control.  Numerous options exist, but the most effective and least expensive option would be to start with a diuretic.

I'm not sure what you mean about other tests to be done.  If the angiography of your coronary arteries done by the radial approach (I'm assuming that this is what you mean by radial angiography) indeed showed no problem, then you have already undergone the gold standard test.

What you CAN do is to ensure that you have done the simple things that we know reduce mortality: stop smoking, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, maintain a normal body weight, have regular check-ups that include cholesterol assessment.

Hope that helps. Happy Holidays.
