As we age, our arteries become lined with calcium. Some more than others. So, "shattered to pieces" sounds like the artery was extremely calcified.

The term "heart of stone" comes from the ancient Greek physicians, when they described the heart of an elderly person (autopsy). It was full of calcium deposits within the large and small arteries.
