inderal and immunotherapy

by Dave__0__0, Feb 05, 1999 12:00AM

  Dear Doctor,
I am currently taking Inderal LA 60mg once daily to help reduce heart palpatations caused by hyperactive thyroid. I am interested in taking immunotherapy to help control severe allergies, but my allergist has advised me that I would have to discontinue the Ideral because of the risk of shock in the case of a hypersensitive reaction to the antigen.
Is this a valid concern? If so, are there alternatives to the Inderal which could be used in conjunction with the immunotherapy?

  Thank you in advance,
  Dave

Dear Dave,
I think it would be best that you await elective treatment of allergies until the thyroid condition is resolved and you no longer have to be on the inderal.
In general Inderal is the best drug for your palpitations from the overactive thyroid, however, even the alternatives lower blood pressure to a degree that they too would be a concern for the immunologist who will be administering the immunotherapy.
My advise above should be discussed with the doctor who placed you on the inderal as well as the doctor who is treating your thyroid disorder (if they are separte doctors.)
I hope this information is useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for
