Dear Melissa,
Inverted T waves are a very non-specific finding, and actually come in all
shapes and sizes(are the inverted t-waves symmetrical or assymetrical for
example?).  Thus, as usual one can and should not base any therapy (in this
case you suggest medical therapy-beta-blockers) on an ecg finding alone.
A thorough evaluation would include the history and physical initially, followed
by any indicated tests and or medications.
Patients that should be on beta-blockers for sure are those with a history of
MI(heart attack), and that is of course barring no contraindication to the medication.
I hope you understand that inverted t-waves do not even necessarily mean there
is something wrong with the heart.  Quite a few people with completely normal hearts
have non-specific changes on their ecg(better stated, they have an ecg that is
a variant of normal.)  Again, there is no way to determine the significance of
any "non-specific" change with out a full history and physical exam.
Please write again if you have any further questions.
