husband 68 diabetic 1-1/2(was 28 when diagnosed) ... 100% blockage to carotid artery 3 yrs ago/had surgery to scrape artery ... starting having tias and found was again 95% blocked/did stent implant/ only partially worked as 45 degree kink in artery above stent still causing blockage.  Was also recently diagnosed with rt side heart problems causing silent eschemia (no feeling due to diabetic neuropathy.  Doctor has now increased his lipitor to 80 mg from 40.  Is there anything else we can do he is also on plavix and 81 mg baby aspirin to keep blood thin.  He required 10,000 units of blood thinners during angioplasty (his blood is very thick).  Just wanted to know if another drug would be better for him.  Thankyou for your help

Thanks for the question.

The routine medications used for coronary artery and carotid artery disease would include aspirin, a statin (such as lipitor), and medicines to treat other cardiac risk factors, such as diabetes or hypertension.  The plavix is a good choice for someone with a stent.  Of course, smoking cessation and eating a good diet will be key as well.
