Have you been diagnosed with MVP?  Mitral valve prolapse is a very common condition and doesn't usually cause any problems.  I don't know of any situations where someone died from having MVP without any other problems.  Some people, with MVP, have palpitations or other symptoms.  But, in many cases, the patient isn't even aware of the prolapse.  The doctor may hear a click when listening with a stethoscope and the patient may be referred for an echocardiogram.  At that time, the valve is assessed and the patient is told whether any followup is necessary.

If you have MVP and you also have mitral regurgitation (leaky valve), depending on the severity you may be asked to have periodic echocardiograms and notify your doctor of any changes in symptoms.
