murmur vs regurgitation

I have posted before.  A quick background.  1974, at age 22 dx with II/VI blowing systolic murmur.  In 1996, I took Phen-fen for approximately 4 months when I developed shortness of breath walking up steps.  Jump to 1997, dx with Id. DCM, LVSD, all valves with mild regurgitation.  My aortic and mitral valves were mildly thickened. Most recent echo shows no DCM, normal aortic and mitral valves reflecting no thickening.  All valves leak mildly, however, my aortic valve has mild to moderate regurgitation.  My question is, on the letter my cardiologist forwarded to my family doctor, he states, "She has a II/VI systolic ejection murmur, but I did not hear any aortic regurgitation or gallop sounds".  I thought that the murmur and the regurgitation were one in the same. What is the difference?  Thank you so much.

Significant regurgitation does cause a murmur, but it cannot always be heard by the human ear. Your cardiologist's letter suggests that he did not hear any regurgitation. THe murmur he heard was that due to blood flow in the heart, not necessarily an abnormality.
