myxomatous degeneration

What is the current thinking regarding repair of a mitral valve presenting myxomatous degeneration?  Some tests indicate the diseased tissue fails at half of the load presented to "normal" tissue.  Therefore, is it practical to repair if the remaining tissue is relatively weak?  What are the controlling factors in making this decision?

Dear Riverrat432,

It is possible to repair severe mitral regurgitation due to myxomatous degeneration with a high rate of success.  I would recommend seeking an opinion from a large university based medical center such as the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. You may visit our website at www.ccf.org to learn more or call 1-800-CCF-CARE to schedule an appointment with a cardiologist in the imaging section.
