Mitral valve prolapse is a congenital condition (you were born with it) that is related to abnormal connective tissue.  This tissue makes up the valve and because it is abnormal it allows it to prolapse into the atrium during contraction of the ventricle.  The prolapse allows some blood to leak back into the atrium.  Over time, the valve allows more and more blood to go back to the atrium, causing worsening regurtitation.  Normally the valve does not prolapse in order the keep the blood from going back in to the atrium and therefore, it cause it to go into the aorta.  Pt with MVP and MR tend to have chest pain, exertional symptoms and even syncope.  You should be started on a beta blocker to see if those symptoms improve.  You should have a thorough evaluation by a cardiologist.  He may also choose to get an exercise stress test to assess your shortness of breath.  If the echo is suspicious of more severe regurgitation, you may also need a more advanced echo called a TEE to further assess the valve.  These tests are usually necessary in the more advanced form of this disease process.  I don't think that you are there yet.  Mitral valve prolapse may lead to severe MR at which point you will need surgery.  Mitral valves can typically be repaired in that situation.  This is more feasible when the prolapse is of the posterior leaflet.  With the anterior leaflet the repair is less unlikely and mitral valve replacement may be necessary.  Your cardiologist will explain this to you in more detail.
