occasional chest pain when running

by malaya, Oct 02, 2004 12:00AM
Occasionally when running I feel chest pain when inhaling on the right side of my breastbone just under my ribs. I get this when running longer than usual (over 75 minutes) or after taking time off of running. I often drink a cup of coffee in the morning before my run, so I'm not sure if this may be the cause. This has been going on for a few years, but it's gotten better since I've been running more regularly (I now run 3-8 miles about 5 days a week). The pain goes away if I stop and walk for a few minutes. I'm a 27 yo white female.

I haven't had health insurance for 5 years but I'll be covered through work in 2 months. I can't afford much testing right now.

Thanks.

malaya,

I wouldnt order any particular test based on your symptoms, from the limited info you provided, it is highly unlikely not your heart.

Other causes of chest pain in runners could be musculoskeletal or even occult asthma.

The only thing you would need with respect to health care is a good internist for your well woman exam.

good luck

It's very doubtful that the pain you are having is cardiac-related. It could be acid reflux from the coffee you drink before you run. It could also be muscle related. Once you get insurance just have it checked by your doctor. I would not be too concerned about it though. Good luck.

Oh i get this pain alot when i run. When i run for too long i get the worst pain in that exact same area and it hurts more when i breath in. Im sure alot of people (especially out of shape) have felt this many times.

You said that you have been running regular now and that the pain has calmed down so i guess with you running more your body is getting used to it more and the pain will stop.
