I offered two questions in my 2 July post, received two responses but neither answered my questions.  Think I may have included too much superfluous info, so will try again.  My last biannual blood test showed my cholesterol to be 57mg, LDL 16mg, and HDL 34mg.  My questions: (1) if the 'good' cholesterol range is 50-200mg as I understand it to be, should there be concern if one's cholesterol drops below 50mg?  And, (2) although my 34mg HDL is below 40mg, it is also more than twice my 16mg LDL.  I wonder if this ratio means my HDL may not be too low?  Thank you in advance.

The formula for calculating total chol in most labs is TC = LDL + HDL + (trig/5).  Your total is 57 so your trig should be 35 mg/dl.  Normal value for HDL according to my lab's is 30-70.  **Chol 0-200**;  LDL 50 - 160...my ratio of LDL to HDL is 1.9 (LDL 98 divided by 52) expected value 2.5 to 4.0.
