pacemaker/hypertension

by mcdeanie, Jul 24, 2008 02:07PM
My blood pressure has been 130-140 over 75 all my life.   A pacemaker was installed 3 years ago to correct bradycardia..no other heart problems.  The pacemaker has been working well without any problems.  I recently moved and went in to have my pacemaker checked.  The morning I had the pacemaker checked, my blood pressure was 130 over 75.  A week later I went to have an echocardiogram just as a baseline test for my new heart specialist.  At that time my blood pressure showed 160 over 90.  I thought that was a fluke, but it continued to rise in the coming week.  It is now 190 over 100!!!  Could there have been a change made by the pacemaker technician that could have caused this abrupt rise in my blood pressure?
My doctor has recommended I keep a diary of my blood pressure for the next month making sure it doesn't go over 200 for the top number, and has prescribed HPB medication.  I am just concerned that this change was so coincidental to the day of the pacemaker monitoring.
Thank you for your help.

I can't think of anything that the pacemaker does or could do that would cause blood pressure to increase.  It is, therefore, highly unlikely that the reprogramming had anything to do with the rise in your blood pressure.
